There is a Reason Gas Tanks have Gauges

Hi everyone here is a little note for you to give you some food for thought as we go through these times of shifting energies and are asked to look at how we are using our energy.

When a client asked me why she had been out of work for several years the answer was clear to me. She had nearly worked herself to death, giving of her time and energy until she became so depleted her body just quit working. As we discussed this in terms of her need to control and manage the energy around her and to be all things to all people, I told her that her long unemployment was necessary to repair her body, as well as her mind and spirit because by giving without receiving, we eventually run out of gas. This is why fuel tanks have gauges, so we can know when we’re going to run out of gas. Our bodies have gauges too, but they are not always as obvious.

Every time I start my car I look at the fuel gauge to see whether there is gas in the tank. I need at least enough to get to where I am going and to return home. There are parts of town I don’t want to be stranded in and other parts of town do not have gas stations on every corner. My car’s fuel gauge is one of the most important parts on my car because no matter what else is working, if I don’t have any gas I’m not going anywhere.

We each have an internal fuel gauge that allows us to know when we our fuel tank, which is our internal energy reservoir, is at or near empty. While it would be nice if we had a little dial somewhere that would blink a warning when this was happening, we’re not that technically advanced. But we do get warnings about our declining energy levels long before we’re eventually flat on our back, unable to move and enjoying an enforced timeout. And we can do something about the situation before it gets to that point.

Our energy supply is nearing empty when we’re tired, frustrated, depressed and feeling stuck. This is our signal that we are sending energy out and not receiving anything in return. It’s also our signal to stop what we are doing and to assess why we are doing it, what we expect from our efforts and how much longer we think we can do this before we either start seeing a return or realize that we are throwing our energy down a bottomless pit.

Some questions we can ask ourselves are:

Am I giving my energy away to people I pity, think are powerless and feel sorry for because their lives seem to be such a mess?

Am I trying to hold an energetic level for someone until I think they can catch up?

Am I unhappy, unfulfilled or dissatisfied with any area of my life?

Does anyone or anything I give energy to return that energy back to me?

Each of us has an unlimited source of energy available to us, but how we use it determines how our supply is refilled. When we are using our energy to follow our heart, are passionate about what we are doing, are living in the present moment, and are meeting our needs first as we make ourselves a priority, we are giving energy out to the world while simultaneously replenishing our energy.

When we give our energy to others by making them and their needs a priority in our life, are unhappy with our job, career and life in general, give to others who never give back to us, we are putting energy out that is not being replenished. And we will give it out until we get to the point where we have no energy left. Then we get sick, sometimes to the point where we are flat on our back, unable to move at all. Ever wonder why fibromyalgia is so present today? Those who have it have no energy and can’t function. How long did it take them to realize their fuel tank was empty before they were stranded, with no energy to live their own lives in a happy and productive way?

Why do we do this? Why do we give our energy away without considering whether it is right or best for us, or without first checking our internal fuel gauge and deciding whether we have enough to get to where we need to go and return home? At times we feel guilty when we are doing well and others aren’t, so we try to help them catch up by giving them our energy. Other times we go into a situation that has low energy and use our own to raise it for others. Or our lives can be full of people who routinely want our energy and we simply give it to them because we think that since they ask for ours they don’t have any of their own.

But that is a myth.

Everyone has access to the same source of energy and everyone has the same amount of energy available to them. It’s how we use our energy that determines whether we lead powerful or powerless lives. It’s the first principle that I teach in my book, 30 Days to Everyday Miracles, and miracle coaching programs. And it’s the first thing you need to know if you are going to keep your energy tank full at all times. Depression, feeling stuck, sadness, frustration and anger are all signs from your body that your fuel tank is nearly empty and it’s time for a refill.

Make it a habit to check in with yourself when you are faced with a situation where you are being asked to give energy away and ask yourself:

Do I have enough energy for this?

Am I giving energy to someone else because I feel sorry for them?

Am I in a situation that requires more energy from me than I can give, without depleting my own supply?

Am I limiting my own growth because I’m giving my energy away to people and situations that do not give back to me?

Then make the necessary adjustments so you can keep your fuel tank full and give from the fullness of whole self rather than limiting your own supply to the point where you can no longer function in your own life. Doing this is the same thing as driving a car without a fuel gauge, never knowing how much gas is in the tank until the car stops because it is out of gas.

Learning to say ‘no’ to situations that limit your energy is a powerful choice to make and doing it in a loving way that lets others know that they have access to their own powerful energy supply that they can use to fill their own energy tank is one of the most empowering lessons you can teach them. Then you won’t be stranded, without fuel, unable to function, and neither will they.

  1. Darrell Says:

Excellent article I feel. Well timed too. People are very tired in the world right now. They have been blasted with so much negativity for decades now, and they are seeking ways to recharge and take charge of their own lives and energy.
Spiritual practices are moving into mainstream life as just such sources for health and stability of body and mind. We cannot ignore those in trouble at present, pretend it is somehow OK to just let them fend for themselves for some prophecy to sort out the survivors, not pretend that are somehow self creating all their own dilemmas, fro Cairo to Wisconsin, people are finding their way. Ascension is also a large part of what we see happening in the worlds revolts against their tyrants. This will become an evolution for whole populations as spiritual evolution is for the individual.
