While I know my house well since I live and work here, I was amazed at how slowly I moved in the dark. The candle I was carrying didn’t cast a very big light so I had to take small, careful steps. Did I remember where I had put the items on the floor in the hall? Was I going to bump into any furniture or walls? As I looked for the matches (I knew exactly where they were when the lights were on) and lit a few candles, my house looked very different, with big dark spaces interspersed with a few patches of light. My friendly, beautiful house suddenly didn’t look so friendly.
I looked outside to see if my neighbors’ power was also out and was surprised to see that only my side of the street was dark. And while the houses behind me were also dark, those across the street from them were lit. So the power outage was random and didn’t affect everyone. Interesting. Others had power but it didn’t do me any good. I could not go to their house and take enough electricity for my lights to come on. I had to wait until the power to my own house was restored.
So I carefully and slowly walked back through the house to my office where I was able to write for another hour and then my computer battery died. Now what was I going to do? I had already eaten dinner and couldn’t watch TV and everything I wanted to do required electricity. So I tried to read but stopped after a few minutes because reading by candlelight was really hard (I’m not sure how Abe Lincoln did it but it didn’t work for me).
Every time I entered a room I automatically reached for the light switch and of course, nothing happened. I could have gotten a flashlight but it was downstairs in my now very dark basement. For a minute, I thought about navigating the stairs with my candle but then I would have to also go through the dark garage and since the spiders are preparing for winter and I have a lot of them this year, that didn’t sound like such a good idea.
Why is it we don’t miss things like power and light until we don’t have them? What can we do without power? Not much because whether we are in the dark or the light, our power is what allows us to continue moving forward. In those moments when we are thrust in the dark, we still have what it takes to move us out of the darkness and into another place. But if we let the darkness move us into a place of powerlessness, then we have disconnected from our power and from our light within.
We wander around in the dark so much of the time, not realizing that we have power within us and we can use it to put ourselves back into the light at any time. Sometimes, indeed very often, we take this power for granted until something happens and we are in the dark. What do we do then? Do we sit in the dark hoping someone will find and rescue us? Do we ask others to share their light with us and hope that it will be enough to light our way? Or do we trust that the lights will be back on soon and let that belief empower us through the darkness?
My busy and peaceful evening was interrupted by the power loss and all of my plans were changed. Without power we suddenly realize how many of our activities are much harder, if not impossible to do. My neighbors had not lost their power, why was mine out? And I couldn’t go to them and ask to borrow their power. But that is something we do all the time when we feel powerless. Depending on others for our power is much like me lighting the small candles throughout my house. They only lit the area around them and were not as effective as having full access to my normal source of power. Did I doubt that the power would be restored? Absolutely not. That is the power company’s job and they would find a way to restore the power. Do we have the same trust in the Universe, that it is our partner in our power and will help us shed light on our darkness and regain our power? Do we know that our light connection comes from our power and it is not through the light that we have power? Hmmm, something to think about.
The Universe is our partner but it’s our job to stay connected to our power so we can navigate through our lives. This navigation is not about getting by or hoping we can avoid the darkness, it’s about what we believe, think and do with our power and the light we have. What are we manifesting, how are we creating our lives, what are we doing with our light so that when we find ourselves in the darkness we know it is temporary and absolutely believe that the light is just a thought away.
It’s easy to feel sad, complain about and be angry with our lives at times. It’s a normal, human reaction to feel taken advantage of, hurt and victimized by the things that happen to us. These periods are either our brief moments in the dark or they are the long term darkness that we live in. The light is always there for us to choose as we decide how much power we live with, use, and allow into our life. The periods of darkness will come and they can be minimized by focusing on what they have to teach us. Sometimes we need the dark as a time to rest, relax, take a break and slow down. My guides have been after me to go to bed early for weeks. So after spending time in the dark, I went to bed early.
We can learn a lot from the periods in our life in which we find ourselves without power and remember that everything has a purpose of adding to the light. Do we trust that the light will come back on? It always does when we are ready for it and have learned our lesson of powerlessness.
Whenever you find yourself in that place where the light seems to be missing, where you feel powerless and alone, use it to reflect, consider and make a conscious connection to the light. Then the next time you are in the dark, when you are not feeling very powerful or confident, you will know that the light is not far away and it will return when you remember that it is always within you as your silent and powerful partner on your journey.
Stay calm, focused, and aware and remember your thoughts are creating every moment of your life. Think the best ones.As you ponder this and the other things that are happening at this time (Mercury is finally out of retrograde, so it’s time to move forward now), remember to:
Accept all gifts of understanding with gratitude and use them to apply forgiveness, release and healing to every situation.
Ask for guidance and confirmation and then wait for it to come to you.
Above all, be grateful for this opportunity to be part of humanity’s amazing shift in consciousness as we all ascend into the miracle vibration.
Many blessings in these miraculous and amazing times,
Jennifer Hoffman
